General Practice Nurse

General Practice Nurses (GPNs) play a key part in delivering care within their communities, alongside other members of a multidisciplinary general practice team. They assess, plan, develop, implement, and evaluate treatment options for patients.

Nurses are involved in most aspects of patient care such as health promotion and prevention and long-term condition management. They are key members of a multidisciplinary team and sometimes act as a direct supervisor to roles such as the healthcare assistant.

Duties for a general practice nurse may include;

managing and treating long-term conditions
managing treatment of minor and complex wounds
sexual health and contraception
vaccination and immunisations

A general practice nurse is someone who;

has excellent inter-personal communication skills,
enjoys variety and staying busy
cares about the individual and their needs

General Practice Nurse Training:

To become a general practice nurse, a degree in nursing is required and then to work in primary care, surgeries often request relevant experience within a practice or completion of the primary care fundamentals course. There are many opportunities for further advancement after becoming a practice nurse, there is need for speciality nurses as well as those who go on to become an advanced nurse practitioner after a masters degree and prescribing qualification.
