GP mentoring programme

In partnership with the Training Hub in mid and south Essex (MSE), Primary Care Careers have worked closely with local practices and PCNs for a number of years.  This month’s blog is written by Dr Kamilla Porter (GP Workforce Clinical Lead, MSE Training Hub) who would like to share a couple of initiatives which will benefit staff within their footprint.

MSE GP Mentoring Programme

The Training Hub is delighted to offer a comprehensive mentoring programme for GPs and final year GP trainees in MSE, the programme which has been running for a couple of years; and more recently, an additional mentoring service has been developed for nursing colleagues.

GPs, trainees and nurses in mid and south Essex can access up to nine hours of support with a trained local peer mentor over a 12-month period. The support offer is available to anyone who feels they are stuck on a particular problem or opportunity, within their personal or professional life.

Local mentors work with clients to empower them to create and work towards goals and objectives.  Our mentors don’t give advice but work with mentees through recognised coaching and mentoring models to help you achieve desired goals.

All our mentors are experienced GPs so come with some understanding of mentees’ professionalroles.  Sessions are undertaken virtually, helping to make it easier to fit around other commitments. Theprogramme is self-directed and is suitable for those who are willing to engage and have time to do so.

To date the feedback from GP mentees who have used the service has been overwhelmingly positive. Here are some of their comments about their mentoring experience:

“It helped me to focus on what is important and which direction to move forwards.”

I realised my passion and how to achieve it.”

“It helped me consider different options, it also helped with my confidence, and it was good to speak to an experienced GP.”

“It was useful to just stop and think things through I enjoyed the long time over which the sessions were spread.”

MSE Return to Work GP Refresher Course

The MSE Training Hub is keen to reach out to as many primary care staff as possible and at all career stages, including those returning from a career break and who are new to the area. Earlier this yeara Return-to-Work GP Refresher Course was established to support clinicians who are on or returning from extended leave. This initiative is for GPs, GP trainees and other primary care clinicians working in MSE who are on or returning from a career break, including (but not restricted to): maternity/parental leave, sabbatical, sick leave, academic leave etc.

Those who are currently planning a career break would also be very welcome as well as those new to mid and south Essex.

This course aims to support primary care clinicians as they transition back to work and will include guidance around time management from Dr Katya Miles, Executive and Career Coach from the Working Well Doctor. In addition, there will be clinical and adult and child safeguarding updates to refresh knowledge and enable a more confident return to work.

The final 2 webinars for 2024 (which are not being recorded) will take place on:

Once you have booked on, you will be sent a calendar invitation. It is not necessary to a have attended previous webinars – the presentations are different for each event.
